Art, Archetype & Ancient Wisdom

I have been enjoying a class “Art as a Path to Inner Schooling” with Cyril Coetzee in Johannesburg, Africa, with a masters degree in Fine Art, full-time artist, Fine Art Lecturer and Art History lecturer. The class is sponsored by the Centre for Applied Jungian Studies.

I was quite captivated by his discussion of a painting “Isles of the Dead” by Arnold Böcklin painted in1880 . It supposedly depicts an island near Corfu where people went to be buried. In fact, one of Böcklin’s 8 dead children was buried here. The exact number of spinoffs of this painting is unknown but is estimated to be in the hundreds. In fact, Böcklin allegedly did 5 versions of this subject himself.

I was in an another on-line class and referring to this painting and one of the members of the group, Denny Webster, had done a rendition in fabric. She did a great job capturing the the light in the grotto, the reflection on the water and the cypress trees.

What makes this painting so provocative?

It has seeded an entire aesthetic and thematic genre. Listen hear to Rachmaninoff’s beautiful rendition with 15 million views by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.

What, if anything, do you listen to when you are creating?

October 2025 Behind the Scenes Photo back layer Completed piece Portal in process I had long wanted to try Wen Redmond’s holographic printing technique—the way it layers light and image always felt like peering into another realm. I finally braved it, and with a little ingenuity (and a touch of beginner’s magic), I created a small piece that feels like a shimmering window into another world. “There’s No Place Like Home” is part of the S.A.F.E. Animal Rescue fundraiser now on view at The Art...

Behind the Scenes Becoming Artist of the Month at The Art Collective Gallery was both exhilarating and daunting. I realized that as many pieces of art that I have laying around, they would not hang well together. I suddenly had to produce 12–14 new works in just three and a half weeks. That deadline stirred up all kinds of inner voices — the survivor archetypes showed up in full force. The Victim complained there wasn’t enough time. The Saboteur whispered that I’d never pull it off. The...

Behind the Scenes Where the Maps End (in progress) I’m fortunate to be a member of The Art Collective Gallery. In 3 weeks, I will be the monthly featured artist. Not having a lot of time to prepare for this, lots of things are surfacing for me. How quickly can I create pieces? How much am I affected by the “commercial” aspect of being in a gallery? Is there a way I can simply my usual way of making larger pieces with a message? At first, I thought I could quickly do studies of color or...
